Monty lost his battle late Sunday evening, and we did the last kind thing and ended his suffering. Despite 72 hours of very aggressive therapy, we could not get his symptoms to improve. Even major equine hospitals suggested we end our fight, as there was no therapy they could provide that we had not already made available to him on site at the farm. God speed, good friend. You will be missed.

Monty is a 12 year old Belgian/Percheron gelding who was rescued from a starvation situation several months ago in Tennessee. Despite the neglect he endured, he has been healthy and spry up until three days ago. Monty is suffering from a full body edema, and is having trouble breathing. We are treating him with the most aggressive therapies we can provide, including nebulized medications several times a day. We are desperately in need of funds to send Monty to a more advanced level of care, or to bring that care to us. He is in desperate need of an ultrasound, so that we can better know how to proceed with his treatment.

A Bit of History:
Several weeks ago, Monty sustained a kick to the chest which resulted in a normal looking hematoma. Nothing was complicated about the case, he was examined by Dr. Kimberly Brokaw of Walkersville Veterinary and given antibiotics and some pain relief. For two weeks, the hematoma did what hematomas do and was slowly absorbing.
Three days ago, Monty awoke with a full body swelling (edema) that included his face, neck, and chest. In this picture of Monty resting at his fan, you can see the swelling along his face, throat latch, neck, chest, and under his belly. Again Dr. Brokaw examined him, and this time we treated him for cellulitis, an infection under the skin. Monty responded very well for one day, and then got worse.
|
Dr. Brokaw re-examined Monty this morning, after he had a bad night of respiratory distress. Monty is an unusual case, because while he is having so much trouble breathing, his heart and lungs sound clear and strong. His bloodwork shows he has an infection, and he is on antibiotics to combat a broad spectrum of infections.

Dr. Brokaw has started an IV in Monty's leg so we can administer his medications with as much ease at possible. He is on antibiotics, pain medication, nebulizers, anti-inflammatories, and diuretics.
We really need to be able to have the diagnostics to know that we are on the right path with Monty's care. We have near exhausted our reserve of Veterinary funds. We need to raise funds to have an Ultrasound done to make sure this illness does not involve his heart or lungs. We are committed to saving this sweet hearted and gentle soul. Monty has endured neglect in his life, and yet still remains a dedicated friend to man. He has been healthy and a steady mount for long trail rides on hot days, so we have no reason to think he has some form of heart or lung disease. We all really feel that with the right diagnostics and the correct treatment, we can save Monty's life.
Please, help us save Monty and get him the advanced care he needs. No friend has ever been more deserving.
