From near death, to a show ring superstar, Sunrise has a story of truly rising from the ashes. Found at a Livestock Sale in Athens, NY, we outbid the meat man for a limping, skinny, sickly little filly who could barely lift her head.

This is her story:

Once we got Sunrise (and three other mares) safely through the very long journey home, we summoned Dr. Brokaw out to examine her on an emergency visit. We already knew we had a seriously injured young horse on our hands, but Dr. Brokaw's face showed grave concern as she watched Sunrise try to walk. We were not prepared for what she found.

This poor young filly has a very guarded prognosis. Having such a large object embedded in a hoof is often fatal. The nail actually acts like a needle, injecting bacteria and foreign debris deep into her hoof. If the nail enters into the joints of the hoof, her prognosis is very dire. X Rays were taken, and thankfully Sunrise's nail did not touch any bone or crucial structures. This improves her chances of a good recovery. She is being started on very aggressive IV antibiotic therapy, along with regional limb perfusions..

Sunrise will need intensive care, for months, and even offering everything we have her life hangs in the balance. Her care will likely cost $1,500-$2,000. Please consider a donation to help this unfortunate young mare have another shot at life. She already survived a neglectful home. She already survived a horrible sale. Lets hope she can survive the misfortune of simply stepping on a nail.

Sunrise has now recovered, and is turning a fiery and opinionated two year who is looking ahead to her next year of devastating the competition in the showring! This spectacular mare has no limits to the path her life could take. She is healthy, sound, and ready for a life with someone who can take her wherever she wants to go!
